Remembering Patrick Stewart: Inside His Final Days and Battle With Lewy Body Dementia

Patrick Stewart’s co-stars pay their respects to the late actor following his death at 86 after a brief battle with Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia. Hugh Jackman and William Shatner paid tribute, remembering the Marvel star as a ‘tremendous friend’ and ‘magnificent actor.’ Sir Ian McKellen, who officiated Patrick’s third wedding and shared the screen with him as his close friend and ‘X-Men’ adversary, also honored him, writing, ‘He wore his heart on his sleeve, a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.’ The two legends last shared the screen in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which wrapped filming last summer and is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18. Patrick’s family is asking fans to donate to two Alzheimer’s organizations in his memory. After years of estrangement, Patrick also reconnected with his two children before his death; his son, Daniel, shared a sweet throwback photo, giving his father a piggyback ride.
